Home Acres Sky Ranch is found in beautiful Missaukee County, Michigan. The nearest town, Lake City, is two miles west from the airport/airpark. Lake City is the county seat for Missaukee County and is known for its “Four Seasons of Fun”.
Lake City is located along the east side of Lake Missaukee. Fishing, sailing, swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, boating, jet skis, water-skiing and all water sports are enjoyed on 1880-acre Lake Missaukee. The Veterans Memorial Park in Lake City has a concert stage, restrooms, and docks. The Missaukee Lake Park in Lake City offers over 1000 feet of sandy beach with excellent swimming, pavilions, picnic areas, camping sites, camping cabins, and softball/baseball fields. The lagoon has a paved boat ramp and boat slip rentals. There are approximately 3200 acres of waterways in Missaukee County that include many other lakes such as Sapphire Lake, Crooked Lake, Goose Lake, Twin Lake, Long Lake, Dyer Lake, and Reedsburg Dam.
The official 2020 census recorded a population of 829 in Lake City and a population of 15,052 in Missaukee County. Many others come to the area to enjoy their second homes or vacation accommodations. Lake City offers a variety of lodging options and several delicious restaurants. There is a grocery store, hardware store, convenience stores, banks, auto parts stores, newspaper, lumber yard, flower shop, and bakery among many other businesses to serve the community. Tasty Treat has been serving “largest cones in the north” since 1948. Lake City is also home to many churches and a great small-town library.
Lake City is called the Christmas Tree Capital of the World. Tree fields are abundant among the corn fields, hay fields, cattle and woods in the area. The Univeristy of Michigan has a research farm located in the fields surrounding Lake City. There are multiple hiking and biking trails as well as ORV/ATV trails. Hunting is popular in the area.
Missaukee Golf Club is located a few miles south of south of town and offers a wonderful experience on their beautiful 18-hole golf course that is open to the public. The Maple Grove Disc Golf course and Lake City Miniature Golf both provide fun experiences. The city has basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts along with a small skateboard park near the library.
Lake City is home to the Dawn Patrol Fly-in Breakfast at the Home Acres Sky Ranch airport (May), the Greatest 4th in the North celebration (July), the Annual Cruise and Car Show (August), and the Festival of the Pines (September).
Winter sports are ice fishing and cross-country skiing, down-hill and cross-country skiing at nearby Missaukee Mountain a few miles north of Lake City, and snowmobiling on the many Missaukee Trail Blazers groomed trails in the area.
Lake City is located on Michigan State Highway 55 between Houghton Lake and Cadillac. Lake City is 15 miles east of Cadillac, 25 miles west of Houghton Lake, 45 miles southeast of Traverse City, and 55 miles northeast of Big Rapids. These cities offer every type of shopping and service a person might need as well as their own fun entertainment options.
